Use the following instructions to install the Crestron Extension Driver AI Skill.
Overview
What this AI Skill does:
- Creates a new Extension driver project from a predefined template.
- Builds the installer configuration flow (IP, Serial, or Cloud Connected devices).
- Defines the driver’s properties and commands using the Entity Model V2 SDK.
- Writes the UiDefinition.xml that controls what the user sees in the Crestron Home app (tiles, room pages, and the 19 supported UI controls).
- Adds translations, icons, and colors.
- Follows Crestron’s guidance for logging, error handling, and resource use on control systems.
- Aligns the UI definition to the Crestron XSD schema.
What this AI Skill does not do:
- Does not create drivers for the individual device types that have dedicated support in the Crestron driver SDK, such as lighting, displays, audio, shades, and similar categories. Those drivers use a different part of the SDK and are outside the scope of this skill. To control a device with native support within Crestron Home, use the standard Crestron Drivers SDK documentation instead.
- Cannot be used for any prohibited purposes identified in Crestron’s Artificial Intelligence Terms of Use.
This AI Skill has been tested with the following AI tools:
-
GitHub Copilot (Claude Sonnet 5)
-
Claude Code (Claude Sonnet 5)
NOTE: Only the AI coding assistants identified above have been tested for use with the Crestron Extension Driver AI Skill. Therefore, Crestron makes no statements, conclusions, or assertions regarding the operation, performance, or characteristics of any other AI coding assistants.
What needs to be installed:
Install the following components on the computer used to build the driver before using the skill. The skill works both on macOS® and Windows® OS platforms.
| Software | Purpose |
|---|---|
| .NET Framework SDK Downloads | Compiles the driver project. |
| .NET 8 runtime | Required by the build and packaging tools. |
| GitHub Copilot or Claude Code | The AI tool that uses this skill. |
How to use the AI Skill:
-
Install the skill as described in the following sections.
-
Describe what you want to build in the AI tool. For example:
-
Answer the AI's questions. The skill needs the following information and will ask you to provide anything that is missing:
-
Device Type (as specified in Supported Device Types)
-
Manufacturer
-
Model
-
Your company's name, contact name, email, website, and phone number
-
The transport type (IP, Serial, or Cloud Connected)
-
-
Review what the AI creates.
-
The AI starts from the template, fills in your details, and builds out the configuration, properties, commands, and UI.
-
Generated code, configuration, UI definitions, and other outputs may be incomplete, inaccurate, or unsuitable for a particular application or purpose and must be independently reviewed, validated, and tested by you prior to use.
-
-
Test the driver on a control system running Crestron Home OS.
-
Once you have built and validated the driver, it can be side-loaded to a control system running Crestron Home OS for testing.
-
Refer to the Legacy Crestron Home OS Product Manual for instructions.
-
"Build a Crestron Home extension driver for a pool controller. It connects over IP, shows the water temperature, and has toggles for the pump and the heater."

Claude Code
To install the Crestron Extension Driver AI Skill into Claude Code, add the marketplace from the CLI or with /plugin in a session.
- Issue the following commands:
- Do one of the following:
- Restart Claude Code.
- Start a new Claude Code session.
- Run /reload-plugins.
- Confirm the skill was added by issuing claude plugin list.
claude plugin marketplace add Crestron/CrestronAISkills
claude plugin install crestron-driver-extension@crestron-ai-skills
Or, from inside a Claude Code session, issue the following:
/plugin marketplace add Crestron/CrestronAISkills
/plugin install crestron-driver-extension@crestron-ai-skills
For automatic updates to the latest version of the skill, turn on autoupdate:
- Start a session with claude, and then run /plugin.
- Open the Marketplaces tab and select crestron-ai-skills.
- Select Enable auto-update.
- Open ~/.claude/settings.json (%USERPROFILE%\.claude\settings.json on Windows® OS).
- Add FORCE_AUTOUPDATE_PLUGINS to the env block as shown in the following example. This will keep plugin updates on even when an updater setting (such as DISABLE_AUTOUPDATER) turns Claude Code's own autoupdate off.
- Save the JSON file, then start a new session.
"env": {
"FORCE_AUTOUPDTE_PLUGINS": "1"
}
If the JSON file already has an env block, add the line inside of it, and keep a comma between top-level entries.
Autoupdate runs in the background after you send your first message in a session (within about ten minutes).
When a skill updates, the following message is displayed:
Plugin updated: <name> · Run /reload-plugins to apply
Run /reload-plugins or start a new session to load the updated skill. To update immediately, select Update marketplace on the Marketplaces tab.
Claude Desktop
To install the Crestron Extension Driver AI Skill into Claude Desktop, add the marketplace from Customize > Plugins in the Claude app.
NOTE: A Claude plan that supports custom skills is required to use Crestron AI Skills.
- Navigate to Customize > Plugins in the left sidebar.
- Select Add > Add marketplace > Add from a repository.
- Enter "Crestron/CrestronAISkills". Each Crestron AI Skill will be listed as its own plugin.
- Install the Crestron Extension Driver AI Skill.
- Run the following Crestron Extension Driver AI Skill /plugin commands in the Code tab.
/plugin marketplace add Crestron/CrestronAISkills
/plugin install crestron-driver-extension@crestron-ai-skills
The Code tab shares plugin settings with the Claude Code CLI, so installing in either location makes the skill available in both.
For automatic updates to the latest version of the skill, turn on autoupdate in the Claude Code CLI.
To turn on autoupdate in Claude Code CLI:
- Start a new Claude Code CLI session, and then run /plugin.
- Save the JSON file, then start a new Code tab session.
NOTE: This step is important. The desktop app turns off Claude Code's autoupdate mechanism in Code tab sessions (DISABLE_AUTOUPDATER), which also stops plugin updates unless FORCE_AUTOUPDATE_PLUGINS is set.
"env": {
"FORCE_AUTOUPDTE_PLUGINS": "1"
}
If the JSON file already has an env block, add the line inside of it, and keep a comma between top-level entries.
